A man with a history of petty offenses committed mostly in northwest B.C. has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing late Saturday morning in downtown Prince George.

Brent Lane Wilson, 23, was arrested near the scene after police were called to Third Avenue and Dominion Street at about 11:30 a.m. and found a 34-year-old man lying on the ground suffering from apparent stab wounds.

The man was treated on the scene by emergency personnel and taken to hospital, where he remained in serious condition.

Court records show Wilson has a record of largely minor offences, including break and enter, mischief under $5,000, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance as well as several breaches of probations and undertakings, committed in Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Terrace and Masset.

However, he also continues to face charges of assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose from a September 2013 incident in Smithers.

Wilson remained in custody as of Monday.
