A fire bomb, officially known as a Molotov cocktail, ignited a fire in a Prince George residential complex in the 2200 block of Quince Street, but fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze before any damage was done to the structure.

Police and fire crews attended the fire incident about 2 a.m. Tuesday where they found broken glass from what appeared to be a wine bottle as well as other material common in making and deploying a Molotov cocktail, RCMP Cst. Lesley Smith said.

There were a number of occupants in the complex who reported there were sounds of breaking glass and the rear stairwell was found engulfed in flames from the fire weapon believed to have been thrown through a window.

Smith said it appears to a targeted incident towards that particular residence, but reasons why are unknown at this time.

Police have not been able to find any outside witnesses of the incident, but are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information regarding this case to contact the Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. "We don't want your name; just your information," Smith said.

A Molotov cocktail usually involves a container like a bottle with some type of highly inflammable liquid. The neck of the bottle is stuffed with a wick made from soakable material which is ignited and thrown at a targeted area. When the bottle smashes, the released fumes ignite, explained Smith.
