A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man facing charges from a four-hour standoff with police at a recreation area near Valemount after he failed to appear in court.
John Robert Beuhler, 51, was supposed to make a first appearance Sept. 4 in provincial court.
He was arrested June 19 after Valemount RCMP were called to a site at Albreda River where a man had allegedly set up camp and allowed six German shepherd dogs to roam the area unrestrained. When a woman using one of the trails in the area asked the man to leash his dogs, he threatened to have the dogs attack her, a police statement said.
When RCMP showed up, they were rushed by the six dogs, police said. The suspect used the dogs to shield him to prevent police from taking him into custody for four hours, it was alleged.
Beuhler faces five charges from the incident and now a sixth from the failure to appear.
