School District 57 will receive $1.6 million in funding for school upgrades and classroom supplies, the provincial government announced Thursday.

Five area schools will get $900,500 to upgrade plumbing lines, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The schools are Edgewood elementary, Nukko Lake elementary, Pineview elementary, Foothills elementary and Blackburn elementary.

The district will also receive $650,519 for classroom supplies and equipment including lab supplies, textbooks and art supplies.

The district will also begin back-to-school planning together with teachers and parents to discuss uses of the one-time funding to lower costs for parents and help support B.C.'s new curriculum.
