At least 11 people are without a home after a fire struck their apartment building on Monday morning.

Those affected are getting help finding new places to stay and with food and clothes through the province's emergency social services program, Prince George RCMP's victim services coordinator Krista Levar said.

Once 72 hours is up, Red Cross will take over.

"So it's a lot of paperwork and just checking in to make sure that everybody has a place to stay," she said.

Levar said there could be more affected by the time a final count has been completed.

Firefighters were called to the two-storey building at 2505 Oak Street, near the corner of Oak and Diefenbaker Drive in the VLA, at 7 a.m.

They arrived to find the building on fire with about a quarter of the basement involved although the exact origin of the fire remained to be determined.

The blaze was knocked down quickly but left the building extensively damaged - to the tune of an estimated $500,000 - and the exterior with scorch marks.

"There's no way anyone can live in it now, it's totally gutted," said assistant fire chief Cliff Warner. One person had to be rescued from a second-floor balcony but no one was injured.

Cause of the blaze is not yet known.
