They're not just a bunch of well coordinated people tripping the light fantastic.
The Elder Citizen Recreation Association line dancers put their fitness to the test as they do all the heavy lifting it takes to present their Giant Annual Garage, Craft and Bake Sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This fundraiser has been held for more than a decade and all proceeds go towards operating costs at the centre.
"The line dancers have been together for the last 11 years and there's about 16 members," said Kathy Nadalin, line dance instructor.
"Line dancing is so good for your balance, your fitness and it's one of those group things that everyone can enjoy."
There are a variety of items available at the sale as many seniors donate when they downsize. The Thursday Crafting Group have many handmade items up for offer while centre members are putting their best baking forward at the bake sale.
"So we always have lots of good baking," said Nadalin. "The members donate items they don't want any longer and then pick up the things they just have to have."
There will be gently used clothing available for sale and a concession stand run by the catering director Jean Liversidge. There's many tempting items on the menu including hot dogs with fried onions.
"All at reasonable prices," said Nadalin.
Sale items will be organized so that there will be a 25 cent table, and then bigger items will have individual prices and the team of purple-clad volunteers lead by Rita Svatos will be ready to barter with savvy bargain hunters.
Nadalin learned an important lesson early on during the garage saling experience.
"There was a man who donated a toaster oven and I made the mistake of asking him if it worked," laughed Nadalin. "He said 'would any senior donate an item to a garage sale that didn't work?' So I don't ask that question any more, I just assume it all works."
It's not too late to donate to the event and line dancers will be on hand Friday to help unload vehicles if assistance is required.
Because they are seniors, they will not accept large appliances but everything else is welcome.
The sale starts at 9 a.m. at the ECRA centre, 1692 Tenth Ave. For more information call 250-561-9381.
