Fifth Avenue from Vancouver Street to Queensway has transformed from four lanes to two as of Saturday. The change was made to implement angle parking which will allow more cars to park on the street.

Social media reaction to the change on Fifth Avenue from four lanes to two to accommodate angle parking has been overwhelmingly positive, said a City of Prince George spokesman.

The transformation on Fifth Avenue from Vancouver Street to Queensway Avenue took place early Saturday morning.

The change will increase parking by 30 per cent, something local pub The Black Clover praised by posting a tweet Monday.

"Most people prefer angle parking to parallel parking," Michael Kellett, senior communications officer for the City of Prince George, said.

Kellett saw one negative comment that stated the reason to switch from parallel to angle parking was so the licence recognition technology could read licence plates more easily but that's not the case, he said.

"If you look into the technology, that isn't accurate," Kellett said.

"It can read thousands of licence plates a second no matter how they're parked."

The city's reason for the decision is simple.

"It's better for business," Kellett said.

"If you have four lanes, people tend to drive faster and so there's also a safety element whereas if you have two lanes people drive more slowly and studies have shown people are more apt to park and visit a business and folks are more apt to park if they see a nice angle parking spot."
