Alleged theft in progress caught on video

Attempt to retrieve pickup truck leads to wild ride and confrontation

Some tense moments were caught on camera on Friday afternoon when a man resorted to drastic action to retrieve an allegedly stolen pickup truck.

Alexis Hargreaves and Alex Hamel had just made a purchase at the blanket stand in the empty lot at the corner of 10th and Central at about 2 p.m. when they saw a pickup truck pull up behind the spot.

"We really didn't think anything of it, and all of a sudden, there was a man on foot running at the vehicle," Hargreaves said. "The vehicle started swerving around and backing up in the parking lot to get away from him, and he hopped up on the driver's side.

"They drove across the street, ran into a tree that was beside the apartment buildings there, backed into a barricade, and there was a vehicle that backed into the truck to try and stop him, but that just steered him into the person's fence there."

Hargreaves said police later told them the truck had been stolen and that the owner's uncle had been trying to get it back on his behalf. The driver allegedly tried to stab the pursuer with a screwdriver and eventually managed to get away, taking off down Johnston Street towards Fifth Avenue.

Along with the driver, two other people were in the cab of the pickup, which appeared to be a 2006 to 2012 Dodge Ram 1500.

Both Hargreaves and Hamel took videos and forwarded them to police.

"We didn't even think to start the video until about 20 seconds in. We were just stunned," Hargreaves said.

Prince George RCMP plan to release further details on the matter later this week.
