An arrest warrant has been issued for a Vanderhoof man who faces several charges as a result of an attempted carjacking in the Westgate Mall area last September.

The warrant was issued Tuesday for Ubong David Awak, 34, after he had failed to appear in Vanderhoof provincial court for sentencing on separate charges of theft $5,000 or under from a March 2011 incident in the community of 4,523 people 98 kilometres west of Prince George.

It was the same charge Prince George RCMP were trying to arrest him on in September 2013 at his place of work on Domano Boulevard.

He was restrained but assaulted the officer, RCMP said at the time, and then fled on foot into a nearby wooded area.

With the help of a tracking dog, he was found about a half-hour later but once again fled police, this time going across O'Grady Road into the Westgate Mall parking lot where he hopped into the back of a slow-moving vehicle and demanded the driving keep going.

Police officers blocked the vehicle and ordered the suspect to get out of the car.

When the suspect refused, the police service dog and handler, who drew his gun, removed the suspect from the car, and he was taken into custody.

Awak remained in custody for about a month before he was released on a recognizance with a $1,000 surety in early October 2013.

Awak remains scheduled to appear in Prince George provincial court on June 23 to fix a date on 14 charges related to the carjacking, which include four counts of kidnapping. He also continues to face a charge of breach of probation from an alleged Feb. 24 incident in Prince George and charges of assaulting a police officer and willfully resisting arrest from an April 21, 2013 incident in Vanderhoof.

He is described as five feet six inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds.
