A Prince George man is suspected of squirreling away over $26,000 worth of stolen property throughout the downtown area.

Clinton Levi Poitras, 34, was arrested Monday evening after the discovery of a mountain bike in an alley near Second Avenue prompted a call to the Prince George RCMP.

The bike appeared to be new and very expensive, raising suspicions for the officers who were dispatched to the scene and they conducted checks of businesses in the area.

They found signs that one had been broken into, and once inside they found a man "decked out in new clothing and about to remove another expensive mountain bike," Cpl. Craig Douglass said.

When they looked at images from the store's surveillance camera, they found he had taken out four other bikes before RCMP showed up, Douglass added.

With help from the public, RCMP located the bikes and other property that had been stashed throughout the downtown area.

Court records show Poitras has a long list of criminal convictions, many related to thefts and possession of stolen property.

Poitras has been charged with one count each of theft over $5,000 and break and enter and committing an indictable offence. He remained in custody pending a first appearance in court on Wednesday.
