Alleged baby snatching leads to jail time for assault

A man originally accused of trying to snatch a four-month baby girl from her parents while high on drugs was sentenced to 180 days in jail but on different charges related to the incident.

David Michael Lucas, 29, will serve time for one count each of assault and resisting arrest while stays of proceedings were issued for abduction of a person under 14, kidnapping, two other counts of assault and two counts of willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

The sentence, which also includes three years probation and a 10-year firearms prohibition, stems from a July 9 incident in which Prince George RCMP were called to a report of a man approaching a couple from behind, at 8th Avenue and Victoria Street, pushing between them, mumbling that the baby was in danger and trying grab the child from its stroller.

Witnesses told police the suspect then assaulted the mother and father as they tried to fight him off.

When he was unable to make off with the baby he allegedly ripped off the cover of the baby stroller and began charging at the oncoming traffic in the area.

Lucas, who was also sentenced to 30 days in jail for two counts of breach of probation committed in Dawson Creek and Vancouver, has an extensive criminal record, including possession for the purpose of trafficking, break and enter to commit an offence, theft under $5,000 and possession or use of a stolen credit card.

Most seriously, he was among four men who received jail terms for a severe beating of a a city man with weapons near a Queensway convenience store in Sept. 2007. The four were originally charged with attempted murder but were convicted for aggravated assault.

In November 2007, Lucas was sentenced to 14 months in jail for two counts of aggravated assault while Jeff Robert Legault was sentenced to four years and eight months and Willy Augustine Wycotte received eight months.

The three were also issued 10 year firearms prohibitions. Four months later, Hector Napolean Romero was sentenced to 20 months house arrest and issued a lifetime firearms prohibition.

Lucas's most recent sentence was issued Monday in Prince George provincial court. He had been held in custody since his arrest on the charges.
