B.C. Housing will purchase the airspace occupied by Elizabeth Fry Place at 1373 Sixth Ave. once construction of the seniors' housing complex is complete.
The city currently operates a 154-stall underground parking lot beneath the future seniors centre.
The airspace above the city-owned parkade currently belongs to Commonwealth Health Corp. when it purchased the former Chances Good Time Gaming Centre on July 31, 2009.
The unusual arrangement was part of a partnership between gaming centre operator John Major and the City of Prince George. Major purchased the airspace from the city for $1.2 million to build the gaming centre, and signed a $3 million agreement to build the parking lot for the city.
The final cost of building the parking lot was $4.86 million, leaving Major to pay $1.86 million of the cost.
The Chances Good Time Gaming Centre closed in October, 2008 - four months after opening. Major relocated the bingo services at the centre to the Treasure Cove Casino, which he continues to own and operate.
