Airport interior getting facelift

Travellers will notice a few changes in the Prince George Airport terminal.

For about a month now, passengers have been able to get coffee and breakfast foods from vending machines in the holding room, said airport spokeswoman Lindsay Cotter.

"We were getting complaints that there were no food and beverage services once people had crossed into the hold room," Cotter said.

The process of putting new carpeting into the arrival area began Monday and should be completed by the end of this week.

The airport is also hoping to have a new lease signed for operation of the cafeteria and bar reached by the end of this month and once in place, the entire space will be renovated this fall so it also holds a small store where magazines and other sundries will be available.

It will replace a small store that had been operating further down the terminal but has since been replaced with business centre with free wireless and internet hookup.

"It just wasn't feasible to have a [separate] store with the amount of passengers that were travelling through the airport - just having two tills manned at all times." Cotter said. "So now, there will be a corner that'll have a little bit of a storefront where you can basically pick up some French fries and pick up a magazine all at once instead of going through two separate transactions.

"It just makes more sense."

Cotter declined to say who the new tenant will be until the lease has been signed.

And Westjet will move its check-in booths closer to the entrance to the security area to relieve congestion when Westjet and Air Canada have flights in at the same time. Westjet will offer self-serve check outs once they move which is planned to take place in September as well.

"This is just to help alleviate pressure in that one area and offer people a more pleasant wait in line," Cotter added.
