High particulate matter in the air on Friday morning resulted in an air quality advisory in Prince George for a second straight day.
Although the figures were lower than had been recorded on Thursday, one indicator was still above provincial targets according to the Ministry of the Environment and Northern Health.
Downtown the level of coarse particulate in the air on Friday was 57 micrograms per cubic metre, just above the provincial target of 50. On Thursday morning the reading was 69 micrograms. In College Heights the rate dropped from 33 micrograms on Thursday to 28 on Friday.
Fine particulate matter was within the recommended threshold both downtown and in College Heights on Friday. Downtown it registered 22 micrograms, just below the target of 25. In College Heights the rate was 16 micrograms.
Industrial sources and open burning are believed to be the main causes of the poor air, but weather conditions are expected to improve within the next 24 hours which should lead to lower particulate readings.
Due to the high level of coarse material, authorities are encouraging anyone with heart or lung conditions to limit their exposure to the poor quality air.
