Three days after it was first issued, an air quality advisory remained in effect, the Ministry of Environment said Friday afternoon.

Transit in Prince George also remained free as par of the city's Free Fare for Clean Air program.

High concentrations of dust have been cited as the cause of the advisory, issued whenever the 24-hour average for coarse particulate exceeds 50 micrograms per cubic metre.

Levels tend to be highest around busy roads and industrial operations and can increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath, particularly for children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma.

Those suffering symptoms are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the advisory is lifted.

All open burning, including backyard burning and land clearing burning, is prohibited during the advisory.
