Air Canada strike would have left Prince George untouched

Air Canada's service between Prince George and Vancouver would have continued to operate even if unionized flight attendants had walked out tomorrow.

Air Canada's service between Prince George and Vancouver would have continued to operate even if unionized flight attendants had walked out tomorrow.

Flights in and out of Prince George are provided by Air Canada Express, which is a separate company with its own workforce and bargaining units, Air Canada spokeswoman Angela Mah said in an e-mail.

The roughly 6,800 flight attendants working for Air Canada's main line had planned to go on strike as of midnight tonight but the action was postponed when federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt took the matter to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB).

Raitt has asked the CIRB to determine whether the attendants provide an essential service.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) has said it will wait until the CIRB has made a decision but did note that during previous discussions "at no time did the employer make a formal request for the maintenance of "essential services" in the event of a strike."

Air Canada, meanwhile, has said it will will appear before the CIRB as required.

"It will remain business as usual at Air Canada and all flights will continue to operate as scheduled," company officials said in a statement.
