Air advisory from forest fires in third day

A wildfire smoke advisory was continued for the Prince George and Vanderhoof areas today.

The advisory was issued by B.C. Environment and the Northern Health Authority on Monday because weather conditions are forcing smoke from wildfires west of Prince George to move east-southeast, producing smoky skies throughout the region.

Provincial environment officials said smoke concentrations will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change.

It's the second time in the past two weeks, a wildfire smoke advisory has been issued in Prince George.

As a result of the wildfire smoke advisory, provincial officials are warning people with chronic underlying medical conditions should postpone strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted.

The officials also said that staying indoors and in air-conditioned spaces helps to reduce fine particulate exposure.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

City of Prince George bylaws prohibits recreational fires during advisories. Industry is also asked to reduce emission during air quality advisories.
