A Prince George mother of a young adult with developmental disabilities is urging families in similar situations to take a look at a program the College of New Caledonia (CNC) is offering.
Called Adventure Seekers, it's designed for people 18 to 30 with moderate to severe disabilities, who have completed their secondary education and continue to have a strong interest in learning.
Terri Robertson said there are six enrolled in the program and it needs three more to run.
"It's more than just the classroom," said Robertson. "They're in a social setting with their peers and it's about becoming part of the larger college community and the larger city community."
Students meet twice a week for four hours where they cover topics of relevance and interest -- current events, arts, computer technology -- with an focus on global travel. The idea is to increase and maintain functional literacy, support individual growth and increase community participation.
Applications for acceptance into the fall semester, which starts in September, must be submitted by May 1 and the fee of $500 for the term is due by June 15. Provision of a support worker is the participant's responsibility.
