Seniors looking for something to do to improve mind and body don't have to look too far.
Those 55 and over might want to visit the information session for a new project called the Active Aging Project, a year-long effort that offers physical activity and information workshops geared for seniors in the Prince George community.
To get the most value from the program, organizers are asking seniors who are looking to make the year-long commitment to come to the information session on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Prince George Native Friendship Centre (PGNFC) where refreshments will be served.
A core group of seniors and elders will be invited to two monthly activities for the next year, including physical activity like walking, swimming or gardening and information workshops discussing topics like estates, community safety and financial literacy.
"We've partnered with the Native Friendship Centre for the Better At Home program and the Meals on Wheels program and this is another type of partnership - this one is a more active partnership," said Lola-Dawn Fennell, general manager of the Prince George Council of Seniors (PGCOS). "During the different activities going on in the Active Aging Project there will be somebody from here or the Native Friendship Centre who will accompany the group so they'll be providing support to the people participating."
The two partnering organizations will assist the seniors by providing reminder calls of the events taking place, as well as covering the cost of bus passes and admission fees to those activities taking place offsite. To further encourage participating seniors, the PGCOS and PGNFC will provide additional bus passes to those participants who wish to do activities more often and independently of the project.
"The Council of Seniors and the Native Friendship Centre wishes to extend the invitation to all seniors and elders," said Fennell. "We're quite excited about the program."
