A trio of University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) academics have added certified general accountant designations to the list of letters behind their names.

The recipients were:

- Han Donker, chair of UNBC's school of business, who also holds a doctorate in finance and accounting from the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands and a master's in science in economics from the Free University of Amsterdam.

- Bita Mashayekhi, an assistant professor of accounting at UNBC's school of business. Her research analyzes how different aspects of corporate governance influence firms' performance and financial reporting.

Mashayekhi has examined board of directors' characteristics as the cornerstone of corporate governance.

In this research she explored the influences of board composition, board size, and board independence on the quality of earnings reported by public firms.

- Alex Ng, an associate professor of finance. He teaches finance and international business and he is currently bringing the "principles of responsible management education -a United Nations initiative - to business students.

His research interests include corporate finance and sustainability. He completed a doctorate in business administration at Nova Southeastern University in Florida in 2006.

They were presented with their designations on Friday.

"They have a new appreciation of the challenges accountants face on the job, which can only benefit their research and teaching," said B.C. Certified General Accountants Association chair Bruce Hurst in a press release.

"Our new CGAs have also enhanced the ties between their institutions and the largest accounting body in the province. We still have much we can learn from one another."
