Aboriginal power projects get cash boost

The federal government announced funding for 16 First Nations initiatives in BC related to alternative energy projects. Six of the projects are based in northern BC, four of them in the general area of Prince George.

The federal government announced funding for 16 First Nations initiatives in BC related to alternative energy projects.

Six of the projects are based in northern BC, four of them in the general area of Prince George. They are:

Kwadacha Nation (north of Mackenzie): $100,000 to implement the Kwadacha Health and Community Building geothermal system.

Tsay Keh Dene Band (north of Mackenzie): $150,000 to implement a new Tsay Keh Dene Village biomass energy system.

West Moberly First Nations (Chetwynd area): $63,500 to implement a geothermal energy project.

Xeni Gwet'in First Nation (Nemiah Valley): $72,000 towards the Xeni Gwet'in community building energy efficiency upgrade and solar-propane hybrid power installation.

Additionally in the north:

Haida Nation (islands west of Prince Rupert): $60,000 to support a biomass energy conversion feasibility and sizing study for Haida Gwaii.

Laxgalts'ap Village Government (Nass Valley): $95,765 to install geothermal energy at the Laxgalts'ap Community Centre.

The BC total was $1.2 million, part of a $20 investment of national funds for aboriginal green energy projects to be unveiled by 2016.
