Abbott declares run for Liberal leadership

Education Minister George Abbott announced this morning, as expected, he has quit cabinet to run for the B.C. Liberal leadership.

Abbott, the MLA for Shuswap in the Okanagan, played heavily on his roots as a rural MLA, saying that what he's learned in 30 years of public life is that the only enduring change is collaborative change.

He said he has taken that approach as a regional district director in the Shuswap and in Victoria as a cabinet minister.

He said it was necessary to reach out to every region in the province from Victoria to Vanderhoof and Telkwa to Trail.

Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad was among a handful of colleagues that joined Abbott for his announcement in downtown Vancouver.

The Liberal leadership opened up several weeks ago when Premier Gordon Campbell announced suddenly he was stepping down halfway through his third mandate.

Campbell acknowledge he had become a lightning rod for public anger, largely over the introduction of the harmonized sales tax.
