There's a new mural gracing what used to be a big blank wall in the heart of downtown where bright images now perfectly reflect what goes on inside the brick building located at 425 Brunswick St.
The Prince George & District Senior Citizens Activity Centre Society received funding through a New Horizons grant and most recently the Downtown Business Improvement Association to improve the outside of the building with new light fixtures soon to be installed.
The mural was created by artist Greg Gislason, better known as the Grinch, and painter of the Prince George Airport's mural called Spirit Of The Games. It took most of the summer to get the job done.
"Like any renovation, it's always nice when it's done," said Trianda Cuthbert, administrator of the Senior Activity Centre. "Everybody seems to be enjoying it. I think it looks pretty cool."
People are already taking notice of the mural.
Cuthbert was out in the community purchasing paint across town and a young person acknowledged the new downtown mural.
"That's kind of neat," said Cuthbert.
"And all generations are noticing it."
Cuthbert said that was the whole point of creating a mural.
"We wanted everybody to know that this is who we are," said Cuthbert.
"We're not a stuffy place that seniors come to die. This is a place to come and enjoy life. It's recreation and activity and it's life."
Alive and free to enjoy it, was the message Cuthbert wanted to impart through the mural.
"That's who we are," said Cuthbert. "We don't have the commitments that come with having young kids, the daily struggles of work and everything else and now we can be free to enjoy life."
The centre is open five days a week, serves lunch and has a regular schedule of activities including carpet bowling, floor curling, crib, fitness, line dancing, bridge, walking group, mini bingo, whist, and the knitting and crafting group.
Then on Saturdays there's a major bingo from 12:15 to 4 p.m.
"Everyone is welcome here," said Cuthbert.
