80-unit apartment building planned for downtown Prince George

A developer is seeking to redevelop a vacant lot on Brunswick Street into a mixed-use building.

A B.C.-based developer is seeking to build a mixed-use building including 80 apartments on a vacant lot on Brunswick Street.

On Monday night, city council approved the first two readings of a site-specific rezoning for 611 Brunswick St. to allow the development. Final reading of the rezoning will be considered once the developer, 611 Brunswick Street Holdings Ltd. (BC1055697), has submitted a servicing brief to the city’s satisfaction.

“The site is currently vacant following the removal of the previous structure, which was lost due to a fire,” city director of planning and development Deanna Wasnik said. “Administration supports this application, as it is consistent with the policy direction of the Official Community Plan, the vision of Smart Growth on the Ground concept plan and addresses a housing need as outlined in the city’s housing needs report.”

The building on the site burned down on Oct. 10, 2021. At the time of the fire it was home to RE/MAX Centre City Realty, but had previously been home to the Buffalo Brewing Company and Jordy’s Lounge. The building originally opened in the early 1970s as the Vienna Schnitzel restaurant.

The current zoning of the property would allow a maximum of 21 dwelling units, she added. No public hearing will be held regarding the proposal, and the city received no feedback from the public on the matter.

Coun. Cori Ramsay asked who the owners of 611 Brunswick Street Holdings Ltd. are, but Wasnik was unable to provide the information.

Council voted in favour of the rezoning without any other discussion.
