It's important to keep isolated seniors safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

That means caring for them and making sure they stay connected to the community.

Seniors are able to get the support they need during the COVID-19 crisis by accessing a province-wide initiative called Safe Seniors, Strong Communities.

Seniors can ask for volunteer help with grocery shopping, meal prep and prescription pick up and even get a friendly phone check-in.

To access any of these services seniors can dial 2-1-1 or fill in an online request at bc211.ca.

This project is a new partnership between the United Way's Better at Home program, bc211 and the BC ministry of health.

When those 65 years and older access bc211 for free, they will be connected with a volunteer who can help them with what they need.

This service is available seven days a week during daytime hours.

“Seniors, who live independently with the help of family and friends, are facing deepened isolation and a heightened sense of loneliness and lack access to resources during the current crisis," Kahir Lalji, provincial director, population health, United Way of the Lower Mainland, said. "Hearing a friendly voice, getting help picking up groceries and prescriptions is becoming increasingly difficult."

Volunteers who want to help with the project can also use bc211 and the information will be passed along to one of 24 designated Better at Home COVID response agencies within B.C.

The Better at Home agency will then match local volunteers with seniors who need help.

All services provided will follow strict safety and social distancing protocols in accordance with the Ministry of Health guidelines.

The B.C. government funds the program, United Way of the Lower Mainland manages it and local non-profit organizations provide the services.
