**Icy roads caused havoc for the RCMP Friday morning as residents braved their first day of ice, heavy frost and some snow covered streets.

Cst. Gary Godwin, media relations officer, said a motorist sheered off a BC Hydro pole about 16 km north of the city on Highway 97 North. Power lines were down on the road which was closed to traffic for about an hour from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and required flag people for the afternoon while Hydro workers did repairs.

**Earlier Friday morning, a 14-year-old girl was struck by a car in the crosswalk in front of Duchess Park Senior Secondary School on Ninth Avenue.

Police say the teenager received minor injuries and was taken to UHNBC by ambulance.

Godwin said there were 11 vehicle crashes- most of which were minor in nature and caused mainly by drivers "overdriving the road conditions."

"Road conditions were very slippery, especially out of town, requiring drivers drive according to road conditions, regardless of what the speed limit is.

"A speed limit of 50 mph is only that under the best of conditions. When the weather goes down, so should the travel speed," Godwin said.

He's telling drivers to slow down and leave plenty of space for stopping between you and the vehicle ahead. "Those who don't have snow tires on are urged to get them on this weekend," said Godwin.
