The option to the sold out Theatre North West International Wine Festival is the afternoon tasting open to the public at Exploration Place Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

"Leaving people disappointed is something we do not want to do," said organizer Tom Dielissen. "The highlight of the year for wine enthusiasts has sold out a month in advance this year, so we are trying something new."

The organizing committee will consider adding an extra evening to next year's festival.

"We hope the afternoon event will satisfy wine lovers who might actually appreciate the breathing room and quieter atmosphere," said Dielissen. "It will provide an opportunity to connect with the wine representatives in a more relaxed environment."

The afternoon tasting is also the location for the Golden Cork Challenge where chefs dish up their skills for a panel of judges. This is the third annual chef challenge that provides chefs an opportunity to present their food and wine pairing knowledge.

Chef Ryan Cyre of White Goose Bistro was the first Golden Cork achiever, while Chris Angus of Twisted Cork was last year's winner. Both chefs are ready for this year's challenge.

"I love the opportunity to really bring the whole dining experience to the next level and nothing does that like great food and wine pairing," said chef Cyre.

Tickets are available in advance through Theatre North West by calling 563-6969. The cost is $25 per person. Free safe rides home will be available, courtesy of Theatre North West and ICBC.
