In the limelight
Limelight Quest is through its preliminary stages. Now, audiences get treated to the musical playoffs. The singing competition holds semifinal performances on Saturday and Sunday at Art Space. Audiences buy tickets to get in on the performances and the voting, plus the special guest performances and other features on-stage each night.
The finals go down on July 17 at the Canfor Theatre at UNBC.
Open mic
Tonight is Open Mic night at Cafe Voltaire. Come down and sign up for a song or two you'd like to try out on a live audience - original tunes or favourite covers are equally welcome. Music starts at 8 p.m., free to participate and free to attend.
Zavan-tastic
On Tuesday night see Zavan Trio perform their blend of swing, blues, gypsy and jazz on the Nancy O's stage at 8 p.m.
Bluegrass night
One of B.C.'s brightest bluegrass lights, 5 On A String, will be in Prince George on Thursday. Come to Art Space and enjoy a wide variety of acoustic playing styles by some instrument masters possessed with a keen and passionate focus on traditional bluegrass. Tickets for this event are $12 each and are available at Books & Co. Showtime 7:30 p.m.
(They will also be at Nancy O's on July 20 and one of the headliners at the Grassy Plains Music Festival on July 17-19.)
Time for screef rock
On July 18, one night only, Milo McMahon will be in the spotlight at Nancy O's for his P.G. stop on a cross-Canada tour. McMahon is a Montreal-based singer-songwriter with roots to Winnipeg, Ireland and the treeplanting cutblocks of B.C. His friends call his recipe of folkie-alternative stuff "screef rock" which will immediately make sense to any former treeplanter. Tickets are $5 at the door. Showtime is 9 p.m.
Sound of Music
From July 21-Aug. 1 the PG Playhouse is alive with The Sound Of Music. The all-time favourite blockbuster film is celebrating its 50th anniversary, the most recent Oscar Awards show spotlighted it with Lady Gaga singing the parts made famous by Julie Andrews, and now it is Prince George's turn to join the party. Judy Russell presents an all-local and all-talented cast starring Shelby Meaney and Matt Russell in the pivotal roles. Tickets are on sale now at Studio 2880.
Lighting it up
Texture & Light, an electronica-indie rock trio from the Sunshine Coast is making its Prince George debut on July 23. Catch them at Nancy O's as they stop in during their Kispiox Music Festival headliner's trip. The show includes opening act FirewoodPoetry, a lush electronica act from Saltspring Island.
