This weekend experience the most unique music of the year at Prince George's reputed Casse-Tte Festival of Experimental Music featuring improvisation, free jazz, avant-garde compositions, minimalism, post-rock, noise, and more. Performers come from across Canada and beyond, along with the far reaches of Prince George's scene. It runs at The Exploration Place every day until Sunday, beginning tonight with a free outdoor event. Musician Jeremy Stewart will stand on the far shore of the Fraser River playing a guitar solo across the water to the audience gathered at Fort George Park near the museum.

Friday Night Mics

Tonight at Cafe Voltaire, the Friday Night Mics musical spotlight is on Roman The Young Guy along with accompanists Mike Vigano and Tony Tabora. They roll the classic rock and pop at 8 p.m. Free of charge.

Tyson time

Saturday, one of Canada's cowboy legends rides into town. Ian Tyson is the writer of such western standards as Four Strong Winds, Summer Wages, Navaho Rug, The Letter, Cowboys Don't Cry and many more. His distinctive voice and impressive guitar skills have made him an international superstar, plus the books he's written and appearances he's made on television and radio. He'll be on stage at Vanier Hall. Get tickets at Studio 2880 and CN Centre Box Office.

Knitters needed

Two Rivers Gallery is recruiting knitters for the Yarn Bomb Squad. As part of the celebrations of Prince George's 100th anniversary, 2RG is assembling this squad to knit sweaters for trees. The plan is to decorate 100 trees with colourful yarn adornments, which is a worldwide activity proven to enliven and add humour to any urban space. Smith 'n' Martin

Saturday night catch the Smith 'n' Martin Band on the stage at Chez Elissa Et Mira (1230 Fourth Ave.) starting at 7:30 p.m. They play favourite rock classics mixed with original tunes.

Ginter gathering

On Sunday at 5 p.m., join master musician / acclaimed painter Jose Delgado-Guevara for a never-done-before performance. The public is invited to Ginter's Ruins (the former home of Ben Ginter, at the Ginter's Field city park) where all who attend can play a part in an original musical creation that has a visual art component as well. Bring an instrument, or just bring yourself. (Details are explained more at the "CONTACT by Jos Delgado-Guevara" page on Facebook. The whole event is estimated at 30 minutes.

See Out of Alba

Celtic stars Out of Alba are putting on a benefit concert for the Learning Differences Centre. See them at Art Space on June 13 at 7 p.m. They will be joined in the endeavour by former OOA band member, now soloist, Tom Young, making this a truly special event.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for those 13 years and younger. Get them in advance from Books & Co. or at the Learning Differences Centre (785 Patricia Blvd).

Maker showdown

MakerLab is calling on community creativity. The ReMakeIt Challenge is on, with a showdown scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at the MakerLab inside Two Rivers Gallery. Come see crafty, handy, artsy people build new things out of old and get inspired for the main event - Mini Maker Faire - coming up on Sept. 19 in Canada Games Plaza.
