They bring together folk-friendly melodies and rock-friendly rhythms "with choruses everyone can sing to." They use vocal harmonies and some woodwind accompaniment atop their adult contemporary presentation style. No cover charge.

Flying, swimming, singing

Fish and Bird make their Art Space return on Tuesday night. The folk group is out on their "Every Whisper Is a Shout Across the Void" tour. Tickets to the 8 p.m. show are $15 available at Books and Company.

Bidini back

One of Canada's favourite pop-culture personalities, Dave Bidini, comes back to P.G. on Wednesday night. Bidini has written numerous books (topics include hockey, soccer, music, etc.) worked as a journalist and commentator, was a founding member of beloved rock unit Rheostatics and now fronts The Bidiniband. See them at Art Space at 8 p.m. for $15, advance tickets available at Books and Company.

Jam time

Nancy O's hosts a jazz-blues jam on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Drop in and join up with the house band led by Erik Tompkins. No cover charge.

Morgan's work on display

On Aug. 8 come to Art Space for the opening of artist Kyla Morgan's exhibition of paintings, with live music accompaniment. The local nursing student will hold court at 7 p.m. According to organizers, she is "an inspiring artist who works predominantly with acrylic paints but dabbles with an assortment of other mediums and styles."

Good times at Salmon Valley

The 7th annual Salmon Valley Women's Festival happens Aug. 8-10 at the Rockin's River Resort located near the blue bridge on the Hart Highway about 20 minutes north of the city.

The event includes arts and entertainment components, tarot reading, empowering workshops, fire circle, vendors and much more. For information contact Robyn at 250-640-3363.

Grunge rockers on the way

Alice In Chains is coming to the BC Northern Exhibition. The grunge growlers hit the Seattle sound out of the 1990s ballpark and they are bringing the revamped modern edition to CN Centre on Aug. 10.

Buy a ticket to the concert, get a free ticket to the BCNE that day as well. Also on the stage at the Alice In Chains event are supporting acts Monster Truck and The Pack A.D.

Tunes at Robson Valley

The Robson Valley Music Festival happens Aug. 15-17 in Dunster (near McBride). In addition to the artisans village, healing arts, food vendors, kids zone, and workshops there is also a list of acclaimed music acts like Digging Roots, Jack Garton & the Demon Squadron, Kinnie Star, Scott Cook, Aurora Jane,

Bottoms Up Barely Burlesque, and many more.

Summer sounds

Prince George's second annual "youth-led, non-profit, outdoor concert" event The Sound of Summer happens at Fort George Park on Aug. 16 starting at 6:30 p.m. Family-friendly free activities included.

Play me some mountain music

Music On the Mountain echoes from Murray Ridge Ski Centre on the Aug. 22-24 weekend. Acts on the bill include Scott Dunbar, Raghu Lokanathan, Joey Only, Zahirah Middle Eastern Belly Dancers, Doug Koyama, Sarah Elizabeth (remembered as Sarah Towle by local CBC listeners), Black Spruce Bog, and those are just some of the ones connected to P.G.

Pineview frolics

Pineview Summer Festival swings for the fences on Aug. 23 and 24. The rural neighbourhood on the doorstep of the city (the airport area) holds their annual slo-pitch tournament, lawn volleyball, loggers sports, the Pineview's Got Talent showcase and a concert/dance featuring local country star Rick Stavely. Swingin' blues

Acoustic swing/blues duo Sabrina Weeks and Mike Hilliard bring their Maple Blues Award-winning show to the Senior Citizens Activity Centre (4th and Brunswick) on Aug. 23. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $15 at Studio 2880.

Garden of Eden in P.G.

The Two Rivers Gallery hosts a pair of new exhibitions for summer, by artists from both sides of the country. Ontario photography artist Andrzej

Maciejewski's exhibition entitled Garden of Eden and Prince George artist Phil Morrison's solo exhibition of sculptures entitled Heaven. Hunger. Heart. are on now for the duration of the summer.

Generator heating it up

For some risque fun, The Generator is the home of Vintage Carnivale on Aug. 28. This multi-talented night features the music of Scott Dunbar and Raghu Lokanathan plus a burlesque review. Tickets are $20 at the Generator door, or in advance from Nancy O's.

Groop Gallery the place to be

In addition to its slate of regularly featured artists, Groop Gallery has a special exhibition running. Phantasmagoria is Benjamin Blanchard's foray into fable, fiction and fantasy through visual images. The show runs until Aug. 10. He will be at the gallery (1127 3rd Avenue) at 7:30 p.m. to discuss his work in person on opening night.
