If you want to be the next P.G. Idol, you better move fast - only the first 40 singers to register get a spot in the next contest, which is open to all Prince George residents.

"I'm pretty excited about this," said producer Dawn Boudreau. "I am wondering why I didn't think of doing this before."

Boudreau said she began with the notion of using judges, just like in the more famous event of its namesake, but on second thought, decided to go with an audience vote instead.

But just because someone has a lot of friends doesn't mean they will necessarily move on to the next round of competition, Boudreau added.

That's because the judging will be based on a points system that balances the scores for a fair vote.

"This competition is all in fun, but the prizes are pretty decent," Boudreau said.

The winner gets $400 cash, their own show and 25 free posters to promote the event.

There is also a second and third prize package involving cash and other items such as an hour of vocal/performance coaching, a microphone, recording time in a studio and fitness classes to get your groove on.

"Let's face it, people want cash," said Boudreau. "There are also wonderful sponsors who have provided prizes and I made sure they are music and performer appropriate."

During the first level of competition 10 people will perform each Tuesday night including June 14, 21, 28 and July 12, with semi finals July 19 and 26.

The final competition where the top three will be chosen takes place Aug. 9, and all performances will take place at Nancy O's.

"There's going to be lots of room for family and friends to cheer on their favourite singer," said Boudreau. "The competition is open to all kinds of singers, and if people want to bring a karaoke CD, that's fine.

"But of course someone who has live accompaniment will probably get more votes than someone with karaoke - unless they're really smokin' amazing. So if you can bring someone to accompany you or do it yourself that's a lot better."

Boudreau will provide her piano.
