Two Rivers Gallery unveils abstract art by DesBrisay

One of the purposes abstract art can have is causing the viewer to think carefully about the real, but showing an image that is odd or surreal.

Tonight, the Two Rivers Gallery will unveil a set of abstract works that set the mind to pondering the natural world around us. The Rustad Galleria is the place where Judith DesBrisay's paintings will be showcased for the next six weeks.

"DesBrisay's artwork emerges from her fascination with the earth and testifies to the constant interplay between person and place," said Megan Hunter-Gauthier, acting-assistant curator. "Inspired by sketches of her garden in Quesnel, DesBrisay created the Possibilities series to embody the delight that she experiences when immersed in nature. However, these bright paintings are not as exclusively joyful and celebratory as they may appear; they carry with them a deep concern for the health and well-being of the natural world."

The exhibition opens tonight with a reception at 7:30 including refreshments, a guided viewing of the new exhibition and personal statement from DesBrisay. It is free of charge and the public is encouraged to come see the art and meet the artist.

"I think many people would do well to take a page from DesBrisay's book and give a second look to the ordinary beauty that surrounds us on a daily basis," said Hunter-Gauthier. "It is my hope that viewers of this exhibition will be inspired to not only appreciate the natural environment, but to protect it."

DesBrisay's work is also included in the group exhibition Voice on now at the gallery until April 17. Her solo show in the Rustad Galleria will be on display until April 10.
