The Prince George Symphony Orchestra presents Tonight at the Proms Jan. 28 with guest conductor Dr. Calvin Dyck at Vanier Hall.

The concert celebrates Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee, her majesty's 60th anniversary of the accession to the throne, and features not only the orchestra but the Cantata Singers, as well.

The evening is a combination of traditional and patriotic music when the symphony performs the Royal Fanfare for Expo 86, Through the Lions Gate, and Canada's national anthem combined with Hockey Night in Canada.

In true Canadian spirit the Prince George Cantata Singers present Four Strong Winds and Farewell to Nova Scotia.

Kelly Road student, Mark Whalley, makes his debut with the Prince George Symphony by reciting the poem, We are More.

The symphony invites patrons to bring flags to wave as the Proms wouldn't be the same without Elgar's Pomp & Circumstance, Arne/Sargant's Rule Britannia and Parry's Jerusalem.

Dr. Calvin Dyck is the guest conductor vying for the position of music director of the PGSO.

Dyck is no stranger to Prince George having played a number of seasons with the orchestra, adjudicated for the Prince George Music Festival and performed a number of recitals.

Dyck, who lives in Abbotsford, has extensive experience as a conductor and is currently the director of the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, an organization he formed 11 years ago. Dyck is co-director of the Surrey City Orchestra and the Canada West Chamber Orchestra. Dyck is concert master for the Vancouver Island Symphony and is an extra for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera Orchestra. Dyck has performed around the world and is an active freelance performer with numerous organizations and also enjoys performing with chamber ensembles and as a soloist.

Tickets for Tonight at the Proms are $29 for adults, $25 seniors and under 25 years $15 at the Studio 2880 Ticket Centre, 2880-15th Avenue, as well as the PGSO office by calling 250-562-0800.
