The 2015 edition of Summerfest is part of the city's centennial. The big event - a homecoming this year for the 100th anniversary - is only a week away. The food, the shopping, the family activities and the entertainment will fill the downtown core with excitement on July 19.
On the lawns of City Hall that day, come enjoy Shakespeare Unfolded, a dramatic ode to Prince George in the semblance of the great bard, complete with installation art as well as theatrical drama. This special feature was created and directed by Shakespearean actor Lauren Brotman.
On the downtown mainstage catch free performances by "The Bigger Balloon Guy" James Johnson, Tympana Percussion Society, Judy Russell's cast of The Sound Of Music, The Killbillies, Sound Addiction, Bright City Heights and many more acts, plus fireworks at 10:30 p.m.
There is also a chance to snap into the art and entertainment yourself. The organizers of Summerfest are creating a photo exhibition that will be on display at the extravaganza.
"Share your best photo taken while strolling through your favorite store, having a drink with your friends at the local watering hole, or eating at one of our downtown restaurants. It could become a part of the Love Downtown PG "From The Streets" photography gallery during Summerfest," said a statement from the creators: Downtown PG and Live Work Communications.
To take part, shoot a photo (three categories: people, places, food/things) with your phone and tweet or instagram to #capturedowntownpg or email it to [email protected]. Be sure to include in your message where the photo was taken. Many will make it into the collage of positive, actual images of our city's downtown in action. It is part of the Love Downtown PG initiative to boost our independent local businesses.
All the usual features and frivolities of Summerfest will still be available, like the Kids Zone, scores of business and agency booths, and the wildly popular Taste Pavilion. Look for the signs of yarn bombing as well, the lovingly knitted tree socks adorning so many of the downtown trees. All the action starts at 11 a.m.
