How long has it been since you've heard a live version of the Andrew Sisters' Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy?
Too long, that's how long.
Now's your chance, during Nove Voce's In Remembrance on Saturday at the Playhouse at 8 p.m., a tribute to veterans featuring songs like Gershwin's Someone to Watch Over Me and the classic Amazing Grace.
Several works by Canadian composers such as Fare Thee Well, Love by the Rankin Family and Away from the Roll of the Sea, arranged by Diane Loomer, will also be featured.
There are 21 singers in the choir and Carli Boyden just joined this summer.
Boyden was invited to sing with the choir when Robin Norman, choir director of the group,
heard her sing in the Prince George Theatre Workshop Society's As You Like It, with another choral member.
"Robin told Eve to tell the 'blonde girl' - which was me - to join the choir," said Boyden. "I was a little disconcerted because I couldn't remember ever singing in a public venue. So I was like 'who's Robin and how does she know I can sing?' But it ended up I was pregnant with my son (Ryan, almost a year old now) and so I put it off for a year."
There are three parts to the choir, the sopranos, the middles and the altos. Boyden is a middle singer.
"I've always loved to sing but really, it's just such a fun group of ladies," said Boyden. "It's so much fun to hang out with them and we do a lot of other things together besides choir because we have a lot of similar interests. It's really all about friendship and camaraderie."
In Remembrance will honour veterans and soldiers who are currently serving our country, said Boyden.
"For me personally, my family was heavily involved in the war," she added. "My mom grew up going back and forth between England and Canada and my Nana only came to Canada after
World War II. She had been a riveter in one of the Spitfire factories in England and her sister, my great aunt Gladys, was in the WAC, the Women's Army Corps, and she went over to Germany after the war and was part of the reconstruction and great uncle Clifford was in the
air force so he flew bombing runs over Germany in World War II."
During the show, Keith Bokvist on trumpet and Isaiah Sing on piano will accompany Nove Voce. Tickets are $15 at Studio 2880, 2820-15th Ave., or by calling 250-563-2880.
