Dr. Kevin Zakresky returns home as the Prince George Symphony's new music director
during its 43rd season.
The orchestra's series includes classics as well as pops for the traditional music lover.
The season opener on Sept. 22 celebrates the rich heritage of French Canadian community with Colas et Colinette, with music by Joseph Quesnel. The piece is regarded as the first operatic work written in Canada. It was Joseph Quesnel's son, Maurice, who hooked up with Simon Fraser on his expedition west and the town of Quesnel, Quesnel Lake and Quesnel River are all named after him.
There are two cathedral concerts including Handel's Messiah, presented in a cathedral setting to offer a complete Christmas musical experience. The Prince George Cantata Singers, guest soloists and the orchestra join together at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Dec. 15.
The second of the cathedral concerts is Mozart's Requiem on March 16. While Mozart did not live to see it completed, Requiem is one of the most beautiful pieces of music that's survived the test of time. The Prince George Cantata Singers will be joined by the Richmond Chorus Association, guest soloists and orchestra to perform the piece.
Traditional and contemporary Celtic music will be performed by Out of Alba and the PGSO on Jan. 26.
The Prince George Symphony Orchestra always showcases local talent and on February 23 the concert will feature violinist Gabriele Jacob performing the Bruch - Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor. This is the most famous of all the violin concertos. Jacob, winner of the 2012 Youth Artist Award, will deliver a memorable performance in her soloist debut with the PGSO.
For a lively musical experience that blends of cultural fusion, April 20's concert bring Brazil's Neojiba Youth Orchestra for a night of rhythm and energy. This concert is led by returning guest conductor Jonathan Govias.
Other highlights include the PGSO's annual Pops in the Park on Sept. 9, the British Columbia Boys Choir together with the local Bel Canto Youth Choir on Dec. 1, and a return of the very popular Tea & Symphony on May 12.
