The heart and the mind, the spirit and the intellect, science and art. These twins are conjoined in all people, and two local writers will flip to the deeper pages in the book of how those two conditions dance with each other.

They will do it in a place where these two internal states are always working together, Exploration Place, the city's premier history and science centre.

"It was James Lovelock who said 'science always uses metaphor.' As a scientific writer Lovelock used a wealth of literary devices in his work that made what could have been dry factual texts

into works of art," said Erin Bauman, one of the two writers involved in the event. "Organizations like Science Slam are also showing us how to drop scientific knowledge with artistic flare that makes it more fun and engaging for everyone."

Bauman will be joined by highly regarded B.C. poet Al Rempel for this science-themed poetry workshop and reading.

"Participants will interact with the exhibits, look at the technical aspects of writing and poetry,

and create science-themed literature," Bauman explained.

The event is entitled The Science Of Poetry and takes place Sept. 19 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Exploration Place. Admission is by donation, and no one will be turned away. For more information contact Bauman at [email protected].
