Saxman Johnny Ferreira and his band invite everyone to join the rockin' fun at the Kinsmen Community Complex Friday and Saturday night.

The Blues Underground event sees Ferreira, a rockin' blues sax player who loves the edgier side of the genre, bring his band along, among them Lindsay Mitchell, the original lead guitarist from Prism.

Ferreira was in Colin James' band and performed with him for many years.

Born in Portugal, Ferreira's family immigrated to Vancouver in 1963.

At 11 years old Ferreira said music called to him and he started playing the accordion. He was 17 when he discovered the saxophone.

"It was the sound that attracted me," he said. "It's the instrument that closest resembles the human voice."

While still in college in the 80s Ferreira began playing around Vancouver and joined the Pointed Sticks who were touring nationally at the time.

He recorded with punk band DOA.

Ferreira also toured with The Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood, Robert Plant, ZZ Keith, Keith Richards, Little Feat, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Ferreira stays loyal to his sax sound, switching from swing to rock to pop. He writes, sings, performs and records with emotion and passion.

Each dance is held at the Kinsmen Complex, 777 Kinsmen Place. Doors open at 7:30, dance starts at 8:30 p.m.

Ticket are $25 for non members, $20 for members and are at Books & Co.
