The biggest display of fireworks ever seen in Prince George will be part of the celebrations marking the Prince George Exhibition's 100th anniversary, said Terri McConnachie, PGX general manager.
The fireworks are set for Friday, Aug. 10 at 11 p.m. at the fair grounds. The fair opens two weeks from today.
The Prince George Agricultural & Historical Association is the host of the exhibition each year and the non-profit organization wants to acknowledge its centennial with a five-day show like no other, said McConnachie.
"The PGX is our region's largest and longest running family event," she said. "The fair can boast the highest number of volunteers and the largest crowds over any other annual event."
Last year, 46,000 people went through the gates at the fair and more are expected this year.
Each day of the fair has a different theme.
Wednesday, August 8 is Opening Day; Thursday, August 9 is Pioneer Day; Friday, August 10 is Kids' Day; Saturday, August 11 is Family Fun for Everyone Day; and Sunday, August 12 is Farm and Ranch Day.
There will be a major concert each day at the Silver Stetson Stage, the mainstage at the fair, and the entertainment is included in the price of admission.
Opening night features 54-40; on Thursday the Stampeders star; Friday sees Krome take to the stage; while on Saturday The Powder Blues Band is in concert. Each night Rick Stavely, A well-known country artist, will appear on the Silver Stetson Stage as well. This year there is a beer garden at the mainstage every night. Seating is limited. Outside the beer garden, people are asked to bring their lawn chairs.
Just to keep things interesting, the Bull Riders Ball takes place Saturday at 9 p.m. at CN Centre and Julian Austin, country western singer, will entertain. Always a popular event at the fair, tickets are sold separately in advance for $30 or at the gate the day of for $40, if it's not sold out.
The ever-popular pig and duck races are once again at the fair while the West Coast Lumberjack Show will be in full swing.
For those interested in rodeo events, there's team penning, bull riding, barrel racing and draft horse pulls scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
To honour 100 years at the fair, Heritage Lane will showcase the best of the past.
There's also a special Legacy Banquet Aug. 9, that pays tribute to the people who are responsible for the longevity of the exhibition, including founders, former presidents, board members and dedicated volunteers and their families.
As always, there's a wealth of midway rides and games presented by West Coast Amusements.
