Out of town musicians need host homes

To inspire young musicians in your household the Prince George Symphony Orchestra (PGSO) suggests inviting a professional musician from out of town to stay at your house when they perform concerts in Prince George.

In exchange, the host families get free tickets to the concert.

"Home hosting is a way for the symphony to keep down the cost of bringing in the artists from out of town," said Shelley Sivell, personnel manager for the PGSO. "Even the guest conductors who are coming to audition this season stay with our general manager Ruth Langner. We could use a lot more host families. It's really inspiring to see a violinist rehearsing in your living room. These are up and coming artists who play with the Vancouver Symphony and they practice in your house."

Responsibilities for hosts include artist pick up and drop off at the airport and delivering them to rehearsals and concerts, said Sivell.

"Essentially, you invite the musician into your home and they are shown good old Prince George hospitality," she added.

There are other advantages to hosting a musician, too, said Sivell.

"It changes the concert a little bit when the person that's now on stage was just rehearsing at your house," said Sivell.

The Red Violin concert is March 31 and several out of town violinists need home hosting.

"This time because the concert has to sound amazing, we have ten musicians coming from out of town," said Sivell.

For The Silk Road concert April 21 the orchestra administrative team is looking for four host families.
