The season of concerts has come to a close for the Northern Orchestra, but that doesn't signal the slow season.

The Northern Orchestra - an amateur teaching, learning and performing group based generally in the Prince George/Vanderhoof areas - is led by composer/musician/conductor Gordon Lucas. He said he is already at work figuring out next season's repertoire and assembling the special musical guests to make each night of music entertaining for the audience and educational for the players. There is also the group's annual general meeting coming up (date to be announced).

"First on the agenda is a day-camp coming up early July," said Lucas. "The Northern Orchestra is having a string instrument boot camp. Quite informal, really."

It is intended for beginners and intermediates of all ages. Each day there will be a program of private lessons, as well as some attention on trios, quartets, large ensembles and music appreciation.

Lucas will lead the lessons in violin and viola with Larry Skaggs leading the cello material. They will be assisted by Kian Draper (violin and cello), Amber Ens (violin) and Rebecka Ens (cello). PGSO clarinettist Simon Cole will also make some appearances to teach (with prior arrangement) lessons for clarinet, flute and some other wind instruments.

The camp takes place from July 4-10 in Vanderhoof. Each day operates from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and billeting arrangements are available.

"We are welcoming all levels, including beginner, adult and student," Lucas said. "If you can't find a violin or cello, contact us and we'll get you something. If you like it, you'll have a teacher you've already studied with at camp all ready to teach you in the fall in your own town. Can't beat that."

The fee for the full camp is $300 (includes billeting if necessary) and the price will go down with additional students.
