Lion won't sleep tonight

The Lion Dancers of the Chinese Benevolvent Association rear their heads once again as Chinese New Year is celebrated throughout the city starting tonight.

"We're performing the lion dance in conjunction with Chinese New Year and what happens is business owners will use the lion dance to bring good luck and prosperity to their business and keep away evil spirits the whole year through," said Kenton Green, member of the association.

The College of New Caledonia's international students celebrate the Year of the Dragon at their Lunar New Year celebration tonight at 5 p.m. at China Sail restaurant, 4288 Fifth Avenue. The public is welcome to watch as dancers remove negativity from the past year while attracting wealth, prosperity and longevity.

Exploration Place holds its annual Chinese New Year to celebrate the Year of the Dragon Jan. 28, which is a major fundraiser for the pre-school and after-school care programs. The event is sold out, but the fireworks display is open to the public.

"The fireworks are fabulous and sponsored by Northland Dodge, at presented by Northern Lights at 6 p.m.," said Tracy Calogheros, CEO of The Exploration Place. "It's usually a 15-minute show like the ones we used to see at Canada Day. Anyone who is coming to the dinner has a front-row seat because they are inside in the atrium and the general public can come and watch the fun from the parking lot."

Children and families are invited to the Hart Community Centre, 4900 West Austin Road, Feb. 4 for a Chinese New Year's celebration with doors opening at 4:30 p.m., confetti cannons, dinner at 5:30 and lion dancers performing after dinner. A family dance with DJ follows with karaoke.
