This weekend begins the Huble HomesteadÂ’s 2016 season.

When the May Pole Dance is on the agenda, that can only mean that Huble Homestead is open for the season.

Opening Saturday, with Spring on the Homestead taking place Sunday and Monday to kick it off, the special event will see families exploring how pioneers prepare for spring.

"There will be some planting in the garden going on and I think we'll be focusing on potato planting with our curator because potatoes are really important because we're having a potato festival later this summer," said Krystal Leason, operations manager at Huble Homestead/Giscome Portage Heritage Society.

Hoping the sheep will be out at the heritage site in time for the weekend, staff will be talking about natural fibres, like wool, because sheep shearing is a springtime event, she added.

New sheep pens are being built to accommodate the flock and weather permitting, they should be done in time.

"We've been really lucky to be out there now for quite some time and we've got a lot of work done already," said Leason.

"We've got demonstrations planned like ice cream making and butter making and on Monday we'll have blacksmithing and we've got some great music to entertain people."

Raghu Lokanathan, local musician, will be bringing some friends out to the homestead to perform.

"The General Store is open and we have so much great stuff in there," said Leason.

"We have more furniture than ever and it's all locally made from turn-of-the-century patterns and it's all just stunning. There's a ton of great local stuff in there and new consigners."

The barbecue will be going with hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill while there's pancakes available until noon each day, added Leason.

Ducks, chickens and rabbits will all be on site. There are guided tours throughout both days and lots of old-fashioned games and relays in the field for the children and adults.

"And the May Pole Dance is a must-do at Spring on the Homestead," said Leason. "It's very traditional. We'll teach you how to do the May Pole Dance and it's actually pretty fun and when it's done properly the pole is super-pretty when it's all braided."

Huble Homestead is then open every day until Sept. 5.

"We're really excited to be open for the 2016 season and can't wait to see everybody out there," said Leason.

Huble Homestead is located 40 km north of Prince George, just off Highway 97 on Mitchell Road.

Entry is by suggested donation of $10 per family, $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors.
