Theatre North West brings some Joyful Noise Nov. 15 to Dec. 5 to the professional theatre's stage in Parkhill Centre.
Those who look forward to hearing the spirited Handel's Messiah each Christmas season might not realize the messy story behind its creation.
During Theatre North West's show, the true story of how the piece caused so much controversy will unfold.
George Frederick Handel and his Messiah overcame opposition from all sides before it delighted the world.
Susannah Cibber, a gifted singer on the London stage, had become the object of ridicule after being embroiled in a sex scandal. Worst of all, the courts separated her from her daughter. Handel and Cibber are involved in a scandal and public ridicule is a common bond, as his latest opera failed.
The plot of Joyful Noise twists and turns but finally it's a story of redemption.
Joyful Noise sees the return of Billy Vickers to the Theatre North West stage in the role of George Frederick Handel. Vickers is one of the local audience's most beloved actors, having twice played Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol in 1998 and 2008, Duddy, the junk-hoarding but artistic neighbour in Ivor Johnson's Neighbours, as well as appearing in The Kite and Dancock's Dance. A 24-year veteran of the Shaw Festival Ensemble, Vickers is one of Canada's most respected actors and an extraordinary talent.
