First-time Studio Fair vendor showcases gold-rimmed pottery pieces

There are more than 300 vendors at the artisan craft fair this year and Pam Hagen of Sticks ‘n Stones Studio Pottery has her functional artwork on display.

She’s a bell-bottom jeans wearing hippie from Fort St. John and it’s her first time at Studio Fair this weekend at CN Centre.

There are more than 300 vendors at the artisan craft fair this year and Pam Hagen of Sticks ‘n Stones Studio Pottery has her functional artwork on display.

Each art piece is unique and shoppers can rest assured their one-of-a-kind piece will not be duplicated - ever, Hagen said.

She learned her craft in the late 90s but then came back to it as a full-time job 13 years ago.

“I really try to keep my pieces unique so that morning cup of coffee is a special experience instead of just – a mug,” she explained.

All Hagen’s images used in her pieces are hand-carved designs she has created.

“I’m just a typical hippie, right-brained kind of person,” Hagen said. “I really like colour, and just what’s different and unique – not the run-of-the-mill.”

There is a lot of texture in Hagen’s pieces. There are gold rims on plates, mugs and bowls. There are twisted mug handles and her great grandmothers’ lace is imprinted on the bottoms of mugs – shhhhh, it’s a secret - and you'll even find it on a bold-spouted tea pot.

“Using my great grandmother’s lace gives it a new life and a new purpose,” Hagen said.

“I’m really big on texture so for me – when I hold one of my mugs I kinda like the feel of the movement of the clay. I really like the vintage, rustic, Boho kind of vibe.”

Studio Fair goes Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 cash per person, children under 12 are free. Donations are also accepted of non-perishable food items for St. Vincent de Paul Society’s food bank.
