Documentary film fest stops in Prince George

Garbage, drugs, environmental champions, water, food, farming and social justice are topics being addressed during the sixth annual Travelling World Community Film Festival in Prince George March 16 to 24.

Garbage, drugs, environmental champions, water, food, farming and social justice are topics being addressed during the sixth annual Travelling World Community Film Festival in Prince George March 16 to 24.

It started with a search for one film to show during World Water Day six years ago and led to gathering community organizations to host the film festival throughout Prince George.

"This is a festival for community by community," said organizer Jovanka Djordjevich. "It is an opportunity, while winter still persists, to get a look into the realms of other worlds -- worlds that we don't see or hear about everyday."

The festival hosts films that speak to the work done in the community and abroad.

It helps bring global issues home, to foster discussion and to encourage action.

"We need to take a different view of what is happening in our communities," said Djordjevich. "There is far too much injustice for us to be comfortable in our comfort and luxury. The choices we make do have an impact, whether we multiply by one, by 70,000 here in Prince George, or by seven billion on the planet. The festival gives us the opportunity to see the reality of our choices and offers us an opportunity to see what change can look like."

During the nine-day festival 27 documentaries will be shown at different locations in town.

Films feature stories about youth, discrimination, economics, food and farming, drugs, water, carbon offsets, garbage and simply being happy.

Some of these films will make us mad, some will make us smile, and some will make us cry. Hopefully, some will inspire us into action, said Djordjevich.

Films are scheduled for lunch, afternoon and evening showings. Day passes are $5 for two to four films, festival passes $30 for all films and are now on sale at Books and Company, 1685 Third Avenue and at the door.

Film schedule is at www.facebook.com/PGTWCFF and the film descriptions can be viewed at www.worldcommunity.ca under the film festival tab.
