A cultural centre in Vancouver dedicated to the Fraser River is reaching upstream to find images of the province's mightiest waterway.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre is calling amateurs and professionals alike to contribute photos that tell some aspect of the Fraser River story. The best of the submissions will be featured in an exhibition entitled *Click* Photos of the Fraser.
"This is our fifth year of doing this, but the first time we are reaching outside of the Lower Mainland," said Luyi Wang, the exhibit co-ordinator. "The FRDC is an advocate for the entire river, and we want to look at it as a whole, and venture outside of the Lower Mainland where we are located. Prince George is one of those important places along the river's course."
They have already received some submissions, and already the historic CN Rail bridge into downtown is a recurring theme. Wang said they were hoping for more than just the iconic scenes of the Fraser. The story of the river is more subtle and dynamic than the grandiose items like a signature bridge.
"A flower by the side of the river, someone in a canoe, a dog splashing in the water, we are looking for anything that the photographer thinks is about the river, or the way people interact with the Fraser River," she said. "We are gathering these submissions through two ways: we have a Flickr stream dedicated to this contest, or you can email or ground mail it in. We will have a jury look at these selections of photos, and the winners will be chosen for three top prizes and an array will be selected from the submissions to go up on display."
People can send in as many as five different images, but each must be shot by the person doing the submission. The entry window closes on Aug. 15. Full information can be found at www.fraserriverdiscovery.org. The FRDC is a 17,000-square-foot gallery and interpretive facility located on Quayside Drive in New Westminster, southwest of the Pattullo Bridge.
