Community theatre is raising its creative head in Prince George once again.

The new Nechako Community Theatrics Society is offering open auditions Monday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 180 Tabor Boulevard.

The auditions are for a production combining people's three favourite things, coffee, chocolate and comedy during the aptly named Embracing the Darkness: An Evening of Dark Coffee, Chocolate and Comedy.

"It's going to be a night of three things everybody loves," said Daniel Yule, a founding member of the society. "We'll have chocolate to sample, coffee to drink and we're putting on a bunch of skits and a couple of one-act plays for people to enjoy. They're all going to be dark and comedic."

The Actor's Nightmare, Pepperoni Apocalypse and Serial Killer Barbie are the dark comedy one acts presented. The play will be presented at the end of March but no firm details have been set yet.

Yule said this group is picking up where the now dissolved Prince George Theatre Workshop left off.

"In June we were able to work with the outgoing Prince George Theatre Workshop to put on William Shakespeare's As You Like It on the Prince George Playhouse stage," said Yule, who was involved with the theatre workshop for the last decade. "The response we got at the farewell show proved there was a need for community theatre in Prince George."

Right now there are about 10 core people organizing the society with about 25 to 30 rounding out the numbers and there's always room for plenty more, Yule said. Not only performers are welcome at the auditions, technical support and production people are invited to come for a chat at the Monday and Wednesday auditions as well.

The society is looking for a permanent home while using the Zion Lutheran Church as rehearsal space.

If taking to the stage is not quite what you're ready for, there is also an opportunity to play theatre sports to hone those all-important improvisational skills or work on theatre pieces they may find challenging. Those interested can drop by at 7 p.m. the first Friday of every month at the church.

"Our current goal is to put on a couple of shows a year and find ourselves a permanent home," said Yule. "We're hoping to have an ongoing show that we can take to different places that we can perform at the drop of a hat because Theatre Workshop was offered that kind of opportunity but they just didn't operate like that. We're hoping to take advantage of those opportunities."
