Coffee house jam sessions were where musicians used to go to perform and to be part of the audience. To learn new things and to teach new things. To get inspiration and to be the inspiration. The coffee house was the culture for creativity to thrive.
Lisa Leisner-Denluck is bringing it back to Books & Company's Cafe Voltaire. Coffee House Sundays go from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome to the stage with local hosts and a variety of talent.
"We are actually trying to resurrect the NSMA - the Northern Society of Musicians and Artists," said Leisner-Denluck. "So I guess this is our starting point to see what musicians would come back out. At this point it's like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get."
Over the years, Leisner-Denluck says they've had a variety of musicians take to the Coffee House stage.
"We've had everyone from little three-year-olds doing drum solos to Uncle Elmer and his homemade guitar made from tin cans," laughed Leisner-Denluck.
"It's been such an eclectic mix. I'm very excited to see one of the original coffee housers, Jim Allen, back from the '60s who is coming out to support it. We've been doing this for 20 years and our mandate is to promote, encourage and facilitate music."
