TNWest Gary stage reading

As part of Theatre NorthWest's stage reading series Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus a comedy by Taylor Mack is presented by Anna Russell Saturday night at 7 p.m.

"The playwright has done a lot of really unique cross-genre, genre-bending kind of theatre," Russell said.

"There are elements of Shakespeare - Shakespearean prose and Shakespearean poetry - within the play but the majority of the play is in regular spoken language, with a few accents."

The broadway play starring Nathan Lane was nominated for seven Tony Awards, Russell added.

Within a regular stage production of this play there's a lot of physical comedy that not only includes the actors but also the sets.

"If you know anything about Titus Andronicus you know it's one of the bloodiest plays that Shakespeare has which is saying something because it's Shakespeare, so the set design for this show particularly is just piles of bodies everywhere so we're imagining that and we're pretending to see it and to climb on top of it and to use it how we're meant to use it so that was an interesting facet but it's quite surprising in having seen some of the other stage readings how you can just remove all of that. Ultimately a good play comes down to the text and if the text is telling you the story and if the actors are pulling that together - everything else on top of that is just layers."

Russell said she's sure the stage reading will be a success and the audience will enjoy it because the story line is strong and the actors will offer equally strong performances.
